Understanding the Eclipse Progression (C1 — C4)
First Contact
The Moon first touches the outer edge of the Sun’s limb. The partial eclipse phase officially begins.
Second Contact & Totality
The Moon covers the Sun completely. Baily’s beads flash, followed by the Diamond Ring effect and the solar corona.
Third Contact Exit
Totality ends. The first beam of sunlight breaks out as a brilliant second Diamond Ring, signaling the end of totality.
Fourth Contact
The Moon leaves the solar disk completely. Normal daylight returns, completing the celestial phenomenon.
Official ISO 12312-2 Eye Safety Directive
It is unsafe to look directly at the sun during partial phases without certified solar filters (ISO 12312-2). Only during the brief 100% totality phase (C2 to C3) is it safe to view the solar corona with the naked eye.
